Oh, Remi and Elijah, you’ve taken me on a rollercoaster I never want to get out of. From page 1 to page 289, you captivated me in your love story and I just can’t get enough!! What Are Friends For? is such a great book and the perfect debut for indie author Sarah Sutton. You all know that reading YA is one of my favorite things to do, and something I’ve been doing a lot of since being in lockdown. My first YA of the quarantine was What Are Friends For? and I promised you guys I would review it, so let’s get right into it!

What Are Friends For?
Sarah’s debut novel follows the life of Remi Beaufort after she accidentally kisses her best friend, Elijah, in a blindfolded kissing game and falls in love. Next thing you know, Remi’s life completely flips upside down as she struggles to keep her crush and the kiss a secret. However, she also has to deal with the fact that she’s failing her senior year and can’t seem to make any ends meet. Now the question is, will she be able to pass her senior year? Should she tell Elijah she loves him and possibly ruin their friendship? Or should she love him from afar?
I’ve been following Sarah on Twitter for a while now and I was super excited when she announced that she was self-publishing her own book. If you follow her on social media, then you know that she’s super passionate about her writing and the writing of others, so I knew her book was bound to be amazing.
I was pleasantly surprised when I read What Are Friends For? Everyone’s always talking about how YA Romance novels typically follow the same storyline and don’t really have any originality. But, Sarah, you did it! You provided us with the original flare we’ve all been waiting for in YA Romance. Each chapter made me excited for the next and there was something new to look forward to each page I turned.
I started the novel about a week ago and I was only going to read five chapters and then get on with my day but I could not put the book down until it was done. I kept telling myself “one more chapter” and then next thing I know I’m closing the book because I ran out of chapters.
The portrayal and showcasing of all the characters were so detailed, I felt like I was actually a part of the book. I absolutely loved getting to know the relationship between Remi and Elijah. The bond that they share is so unique and passionate that you can’t help but fangirl over it. Despite all the turmoil and conflicts, they always showed up and loved each other, as best friends should.
And that first kiss?? I’ve never been more jealous before in my life! I found myself longing for my own Elijah… and then realizing it’ll probably never happen. And that’s okay. At least I’ll always have Remi and Elijah’s story in my heart.
