This might sound strange but I’m both a night owl and an early bird. For some reason, my body wakes up early no matter how late I fall asleep. And although it’s so annoying, I’ve learned to value my early mornings. When I was younger, I always wanted to be one of those kids that woke up at 4 in the afternoon and just ate and went back to bed. Mostly because while my friends were asleep, I was awake with no one to talk to. But, I’ve come to realize that doing that meant missing out on an entire day. And I also realized that with my busy schedule, I never really had time for myself. Which is why I fell in love with being a morning person.
I think we can all agree that waking up in the morning is a hard thing to do. Primarily because we spend the whole night watching Netflix and end up sleeping at 4 am (learn how to electronically detox here). But the mornings don’t have to be difficult. In fact, they can actually be your favorite time of the day.
The morning to me is like an oasis; quiet and calming. I try my best to wake up before anyone else because I enjoy how quiet it is when people are asleep. And you can too.
Down below is a list of everything I did to help me enjoy my mornings. I’ve realized that if I don’t do these things I feel completely out of whack, which is not a fun feeling.
The way you spend your mornings has the ability to shape how your entire day pans out. Therefore, it’s important to learn how to make it bearable.
Why I love the Morning
I can go on and on about how great waking up in the morning is. But, I have two main reasons as to why my love for the morning is so deep.
- I practice self-care in the mornings &
- Peace and quiet
My day is completely booked. I spend the entire day working so by the time I get to my house, the only thing I want to do is sleep. Which is probably the same for a lot of people.
But I found that the best thing for me was waking up extra early in the morning to have alone time.
When you wake up super early as I do, you’re literally the only person up and about. Which means that it’s extremely quiet and no one is around to take up your time.
By waking up early I can take my time getting ready, drinking my coffee, and planning out my day. There’s no reason for me to feel rushed or overwhelmed.
The Night Before
If you really want to become a morning person then you need to start by preparing the night before. There’s no point in going to sleep late and expecting that when you wake up early you’ll be happy. It doesn’t work that way. Which is why you need to set a bedtime.
I remember hating the fact that I had to go to sleep by a certain time. My parents set a curfew for 10 pm and to me, it was the worst thing in the world. But, I soon realized that going to bed early is such a blessing.
After a long and strenuous day, the only thing I want is rest. Forcing myself to stay up late to catch up on my shows just makes me irritated in the mornings. Also, the fact that if I sleep late and wake up early, I won’t get enough sleep to get me through the day.
You need to make sure that you’re getting at least eight hours of sleep a night. So if you’re planning on waking up at 6 am then the best time to go to bed would be 10 pm.
Set Up Routines
Routines are of the utmost importance when it comes to being a morning person. Before you even embark on your journey take a moment to figure out what you want to get done before bed and after waking up.
A typical night routine would be somewhere along the lines of dinner, shower, brush teeth, skin care, and reading/something not online.
Whereas a morning routine would be like brush teeth, skincare, breakfast, make bed, shower, get ready.
It doesn’t matter what order you go in just as long as you have some sort of routine to help you prepare.
Stay Away From Electronics
LISTEN do not use your phone, laptop, TV, or anything that is considered an electronic before bed or when waking up.
When you use your phone right before bed it hinders you from being able to sleep properly and quickly. I know whenever I use some form of electronic before bed I end up laying in bed for hours waiting for my sleep to catch up to me. So do yourself a favor and stay away. Relax with a good book, journaling, or meditation right before bed. Trust me, you’ll thank me later.
Also, waking up and using your phone right away will cause you to spend hours laying in bed on your phone. And we are productive people, therefore, this is a no go.
As soon as your alarm rings, get up from your bed.
Do not go on your phone or stare at the ceiling. Actually get up and get to moving.
If you stay in bed you’re bound to fall back asleep or even feel more tired throughout the day.
Like have you ever woken up super early to do something; but instead of getting up to do it you just lay on your bed for hours scrolling through your phone?
Or you wake up, turn off your alarm, and go back to sleep? This is what we want to avoid.
Do yourself a favor and keep your phone on the other side of the room or in a completely different room. That way you’re forced to get up to turn off the alarm and you’ll have no choice but to go about your day.
Find Your Purpose
Oftentimes the reason you can’t get up in the mornings is because you haven’t discovered your purpose yet. And I don’t mean your life’s purpose, I’m talking about your reason to get up in the mornings.
Personally, for me, I like to wake up early because I like to dedicate time to myself each day. Because of my busy schedule, it gets hard for me to find time to myself. Which is why the mornings are perfect. I use my early mornings to review what I’m doing, journal, meditate, workout, eat calmly, literally anything I want to do for myself is done in the morning.
So ask yourself this, why do you want to wake up early in the morning?
I’m not going to lie to you. Waking up early in the mornings is going to be so difficult at first. All you’re going to want to do is crawl into bed for the rest of the day. But you can’t do that! You have to remember your purpose. And sooner or later your body will start to wake up before your alarm even goes off.
