Exploring Other Genres | May 2020 TBR

After so many hours of booktube, I finally caved in and decided to explore the different worlds of books. You guys know I’m a huge YA fan, but I feel like somewhere along the line, I lost my love for other genres as well. This is why for this month I decided I want to explore old genres I used to love and dive into a new one that I always refused to acknowledge. I also wanted to let you guys know that I am now on Goodreads!!! AHHH SO EXCITING! I’ve been contemplating it for a while now but I’m officially in with the bibliophile world!!
Fun fact: growing up I would always call myself the ‘City Bibliophile”. I love reading it’s literally all I do but just as much as I love reading, I also love collecting books. It’s one of my many passions, so yes, I am a bibliophile and I feel like Goodreads just gave me that extra edge! So make sure to follow me on there or add me as a friend so we can share our love for books! Anyways, without further ado, let’s get into my May TBR!

Batman: The Killing Joke

If you didn’t already know, I am OBSESSED with comics and the universe of superheroes and villains. Growing up I would always watch the movies, shows, and sneak in some comic reads every chance I could. But, alas, it’s been so long since the last time I’ve read a comic book that I literally don’t remember what it was called. So I decided that for my month of exploration, I will bring back one of my first loves and read a comic. If you didn’t already know, I LOVE THE JOKER. He is one of my favorite villains and I am so obsessed with him. So as soon as I saw this available on my Libby app I instantly downloaded it. And I just can’t wait to dive deeper into his psychotic mind!!! Does that make me weird? WHO CARES! IT’S THE JOKER BABY… Let’s. Get. Mad!

Black Clover Chapter 1

As a reader, this is probably one of my biggest leaps to date. For the first time ever in the history of my life I am going to be reading a manga. I know!! Who would’ve thought? I’ve obviously never read one before, I don’t watch anime. It’s just never been my thing. I love kpop and kdramas, but I’ve never been an anime or manga type of person. However, the book community has transformed me!! I keep seeing all of my favorite booktubers talking about their latest manga reads and how great they are. And it’s honestly made me curious to check them out for myself. My friend actually gave me a website I could use to read them since I don’t entirely know how to buy them and I also don’t want to spend money on something and end up not liking it. But I read the synopsis for this manga and it seems super interesting. So stay tuned for my first manga review!

MS. Found In A Bottle & Silence: A Fable

These are both short stories by none other then, the legendary Edgar Allen Poe. I absolutely love that man and I’ve had a Barnes & Noble classic stories collection of his for a couple months now. It’s this super cute black and red soft leather book with silver foil on the cover and ugh!! I’m in love. My favorite story by him is actually not in this collection, but all of his other stories are great too so I’m sure I’ll love these.

We Crossed A Bridge + It Trembled

Can I just say, John Green gave me this book. Yes, folks, one of my favorite authors gave me a book! Not really, his book club did, but he hosts it so it counts! I never really got the chance to read this one so I definitely want to knock it out this month. It’s a book full of testimonies from Syrians who have been affected by their governments mistreatment. It sort of reminds me of a book I read in AP English about the abuses of the government. I remember learning so much from that book so I can already tell, I’m going to learn a ton with this one!

A Field Guide To Getting Lost

Have you ever been lost? I know I have. I literally have no sense of direction. And if you do, just know I’m super jealous. How do you do it? In this book the author, Rebecca Solnit dives deep into her life in order to discover the inner meanings of wandering and being truly lost. I think we’re all a little lost in the word whether its future wise or literally lost in the middle of no where with no gas. So this book is definitely going to help open our eyes to the bigger picture.

One Of Us Is Lying

This book gives me mayor PLL vibes and since PLL was the series that got me into reading in the first place, I am committed to devouring this book! It’s basically about these five kids who go to detention (we’ve all been there, right?) and one of them never makes it out alive. Hello, Ali? Are you there? Sadly, Ali isn’t in this book, but Simon is.. dead. Tragic, I know. Only thing is, it was definitely a murder since he was planning on revealing some juicy secrets the next day. But in homage to PLL, Simon took those secrets to the grave! But who’s secret was it? AHHHH, I can’t wait to find out!

The Lovely Bones

Have you ever wondered what heaven would be like? Well, Susie Salmon gets to experience it in The Lovely Bones after she’s murdered. Only it’s not really what she expected as she has to watch life going on without her. So many of you guys have been raving about this book and it honestly sounds super interesting.

This is actually a memoir I’m super excited to read. It details the life of this girl who leaves her family in the Mountains to earn her PhD at Cambridge. She had never been in a classroom or around many people her entire life, until the age of 17. So naturally, she struggles with figuring out if she belongs or if she should just go back home. As many of you know, I’m a college student, and although I’ve never struggled like Tara in the memoir, I love to read books about people (especially women) who overcome obstacles to go after what they want. So this is definitely going to be a motivational read!

Emily Dickinson

My fair lady, Emily. Oh, how I love you. One of my favorite poets is actually Emily Dickinson. And during my first semester sophomore year, I picked up a collectors copy of a couple of her poems. I haven’t really had the chance to read it yet because I was so busy with school. So I figured for May I’d read the first 10 pages. And OMG! My favorite poem is actually on the first page! So me buying this was definitely meant to be. But, I will be reading the following poems:

1. This is my letter to the world,
2. I’m nobody! Who are you? <3
3. Success is counted sweetest
4. A wounded deer leaps highest,
5. The heart asks pleasure first,
6. A precious, mouldering pleasure ’tis
7. Much madness is divinest sense
8. I asked no other thing,
9. The soul selects her own society,
10. I know some lonely houses off the road
11. To fight aloud is very brave,
12. Pain has an element of blank;
13. I taste a liquor never brewed,
14. He ate and drank the precious words,
15. The nearest dream recedes, unrealized.
16. I found the phrase to every thought
17. Hope is the thing with feathers

I probably will read this all in the morning one day since it will probably only take an hour at most. But I’m super excited!

“Hogwarts, Hogwarts, Hoggy Warty Hogwarts”

My beloved Harry Potter fans, I have finally got my hands on my own physical copy of the Harry Potter series.. *round of applause and cheers* I’ve been dying to own my own set but it was always just so expensive. But I did it!! I have them. And I can’t wait to collect more editions. I’ve actually never read the books in its entirety. I would always read snippets of it because the library never had it long enough for me to come back and borrow it. But I’ve seen all the movies, read fan fiction, and omg I can’t think of a better world besides this magical one. I can’t wait to start reading them. But I don’t plan on finishing it by the end of the month. I actually want to take my time and really soak in every word. Who knows, I might even wear a robe and glasses while reading… Okay, we definitely know I am, haha.

Final Notes

I don’t know if I’ll get through all of this. It’s more likely than not that I will since I’m a pretty fast reader, and as I said, I’ll be reading Harry throughout the course of a couple of months so I can soak it all in. But, I have one more exciting announcement… I’m going to be participating in Asian Read-A-Thon this year!!!!! If you don’t know what that is, it’s basically a month celebrating Asian authors. How cool is that? You can read more about the event and find out which books I’ll be reading here.

Don’t forget to follow me on Goodreads to keep up with me on my reading journey. Also, follow my new Bookstagram!! (Is this another announcement?? I think yes!)

Until next time,
